In October, we hosted a free community dental day, Piedmont Smiles.

​At this event, we were able to serve 211 patients providing dental care services, including hundreds of fillings, dental extractions, surgical care, and cleanings. Many shared they had not received dental care in years. In some cases, it was their first-ever encounter with a dental professional. The volume of patients who sought free dental help is a reminder to us that oral health is still a critical unmet need for many local families. Since dental health is essential to overall health, we have initiated renovations to add four more dental chairs to the Free Clinic and grow our clinical staff to increase the number of dental care visits we are able to provide. ​

Expanded Care

In May 2021, Fauquier Free Clinic leadership initiated a comprehensive survey of clinic stakeholders in order to facilitate strategic planning. This included a broad spectrum of affiliations and partnerships, as well as the most important group of stakeholders — our patients. In total, 289 patients and 74 community partners completed and returned the survey, providing a large and diverse respondent pool. Their feedback pointed to the same two needs in our community, providing us with a clear path forward: expanding dental care capabilities and providing women's health services. 

Our Patient Story

Our patient “Sofia” had been coming to the clinic to manage other health concerns for a while before we could offer her a complete physical and cancer screening. She admitted that she was scared of this kind of visit because her women's health care experiences had often been unpleasant or even painful. She remembered having a panic attack during an outpatient women’s exam and IUD placement some years prior. Our nursing team encouraged her to consider that as she gets older it is more and more important to keep up with recommended screenings and take time to review her overall health.

​After her visit, Sofia was overwhelmed to find that her exam was completely different from her past experiences. She shared that, “This was the best women’s health appointment I’ve ever had in my life. Stacey Shepherd was not only gentle but her ability to provide expectations and clearly communicate the procedure allowed me to relax and feel safe. I felt like a valued patient, and I will absolutely come back in the future!” We are very excited to continue expanding our services so that high-quality care can be more accessible to the underserved women in our community.
